COLLEGE PARK Md. – Three Maryland pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter as the No. 17 Maryland baseball team defeated James Madison, 3-0, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Tuesday evening.
Freshman Brian Shaffer was the standout for the Terrapins (19-7, 4-2), tossing six innings of shutout relief while striking out six to earn the win. Junior Kevin Mooney started the game with two scoreless innings and junior Alex Robinson threw a spotless ninth to earn his second save of the season.
After a quiet first inning, James Madison loaded the bases on Mooney in the second, but the junior worked out of the jam to preserve the scoreless game.
In the third, Maryland took the lead. Brandon Lowe got ahold of a Tucker McCoy pitch and sent it just over the left field fence. The homer was Lowe's sixth of the season.
The Terps added to the lead in the fifth. Anthony Papio started the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
Maryland's final run came in the following inning. Tim Lewis blasted a triple into right field before Papio singled the senior home.
Shaffer was dominant after taking over for Mooney, giving up just one hit. He began his outing by retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced.
Robinson continued his untouchable form with a spotless ninth. He has not given up an earned run in his 11 innings pitched this season.
Maryland returns to action this weekend with a three-game home series against No. 18 Nebraska. Game one Friday is set for 7 p.m. and will be shown on BTN. Game two is Saturday at 2 p.m., while Game three is Sunday at noon also on BTN.
