COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Maryland women's tennis team clinched a 4-3 victory over No. 34 Purdue on Sunday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Terps improve to 10-12 on the season and 3-8 in Big Ten conference play.
Purdue got the early lead by winning the doubles point. Nicole Robinson and Krisztina Kapitany gained the advantage for Purdue by defeating Olivia Gaudreault and Olga Gaistruk, 8-0. No. 73 Welma Luus and Ekaterina Tour fell to Natalia Davila and Lynda Xepoleas, 8-5, giving the point to Purdue.
Boilermakers Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Kapitany recorded singles wins but the Terps rallied back to win the match.
Cassandre Thebault handed Andjela Djokovic a 6-2, 6-3, loss, while Luus notched a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, victory over Xepoleas. The momentum carried over in to the No. 4 and No. 1 positions. Olga Bredikhina defeated Robinson 6-1, 0-6, 6-3. To claim victory for the Terps, Tour ousted Daniela Vidal 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Maryland begins Big Ten Championship play on Thursday, April 23, in Lincoln, Neb.
