COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The No. 21 Northwestern defeated No. 75 Maryland, 5-2 in Big Ten women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
Maryland (9-11, 2-7 Big Ten) were swept by the Wildcats in doubles play but managed to notch two wins in the singles session.
The doubles point was clinched by Northwestern in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Rheeya doshi and Brooke Rischbieth gave the Wildcats an advantage by defeating Nataliya Bredikhina and Kristina Hovsepyan, 8-4. To put Northwestern ahead, Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung topped Olga Bredikhina and Olga Gaistruk by a score of 8-5.
The Wildcats jumped on the Terps in singles play, winning the first three matchups in two sets. Olivia Gaudreault fell to Doshi 6-3, 6-2, while Northwestern's Chatt eased past Olga Bredikhina 6-1, 6-3. Shortly after, Nataliya Bredikhina loss 6-4, 6-4, to Erin Larner.
Welma Luus gave some momentum to the Terps with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Lok Sze Leung. The momentum carried over onto court No. 1 when Ekaterina Tour defeated Alicia Barnett 6-4, 3-6, 1-1 (10-6).
Northwestern responded with Rischbieth outlasting Gaistruk 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, to close the victory.
Maryland hits the road again to face Indiana on Saturday. Action is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
