Maryland?s Run Ends with Connecticut in Final Four

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. - The Maryland women's basketball team's run of 28 consecutive wins ended against the No. 1 overall seed Connecticut Sunday night in the National Semifinals in Tampa, Fla.

Brionna Jones led the Terrapins with 14 points, while Lexie Brown and Brene Moseley each scored 12. Maryland (34-3) challenged Connecticut (37-1) in the first half before a run early in the second half changed the game.

"I'm proud of our fight, and like I told the team in the locker room, when you look at a season and go 34‑3 and you look at two of our three losses are coming from teams that are playing for the National Championship game, that's a heck of a season," head coach Brenda Frese said.

"And obviously the score doesn't indicate in terms of the fight, and we've got to be able to do a better job of closing the gap, but I thought we did a tremendous job in the first half trying to put some things together, especially in the adversity of the calls made.  We just kept fighting and we kept battling."

The Terrapins took it right at the Huskies from the start, playing them even. Maryland only trailed 22-19 before UConn scored seven straight points capped by Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis' 3-pointer that made it a 10-point game. Maryland didn't back down and pulled within 39-33 on Lexie Brown's 3-pointer with 1:52 left in the half.

Connecticut's Morgan Tuck scored the final five points of the half to give the Huskies a double-digit advantage going into the break. Tuck started the second half with another three-pointer as UConn scored the first nine points to break the game open. Her layup capped the burst and gave UConn a 53-33 advantage.

Maryland won a school-record 28 straight games and went 18-0 in its first season in Big Ten play. Head coach Brenda Frese was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and also led the Terrapins to their first Big Ten Tournament title.

The Terps beat New Mexico State, undefeated Princeton, No. 16 Duke and No. 6 Tennessee en route to their second straight Final Four and third under Frese.

Redshirt senior Laurin Mincy played in 143 career games - more than every other Terrapin except Marissa Coleman. Mincy helped the Terps to two Final Fours, the 2015 Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, the 2012 ACC title, an Elite Eight and a Sweet Sixteen.
