EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Mike Shawaryn gave up just one run over 6 and 2/3 innings, but the Maryland baseball team fell to Northwestern, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.
The Terrapins (35-19, 13-9 Big Ten) were unable to rally past Northwestern starter Brandon Magallones, who pitched a complete game. Shawaryn lowered his team-best ERA to 1.68.
After a scoreless first, Maryland looked to threaten in the second. Junior Jose Cuas legged out an infield single to the shortstop, but Magallones was able to work out of the situation.
Shawaryn was unbothered until the fifth. A Jack Mitchell double plated Scott Heelan before Zach Jones was thrown out at home by Brandon Lowe to end the inning.
Freshman Kevin Smith notched a single in the seventh, but Cuas popped out to first to end the inning.
Shawaryn struck out seven to raise his season total to 115, a mark that tops the Big Ten. Junior Robert Galligan and freshman Ryan Selmer finished the game for the Terps.
Maryland returns to action at 4 p.m. Friday with freshman Brian Shaffer on the mound.
