COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Kevin Smith hit his sixth home run of the season, but the No. 20 Maryland baseball team fell, 6-2, to Indiana Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (32-16, 11-7) fell behind early after the Hoosiers put up five runs in the third. Sophomore Brandon Lowe notched two hits and an RBI.
After two scoreless frames, Indiana took control of the game in the third. Austin Cangelosi's two-run double to left field was the biggest hit of the inning for the Hoosiers, who took a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, Smith took a 3-1 pitch over the scoreboard in left for his sixth bomb of the season.
Indiana plated another run in the fifth. Will Nolden singled to left to drive in Brad Hartong to give the Hoosiers a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth, Lowe doubled to right center to plate Smith.
Ryan Selmer, Alex Robinson, Jared Price and Kevin Mooney combined for 6 and 1/3 innings of one-run relief.
Before the game, Maryland honored seniors pitcher Bobby Ruse, outfielder Tim Lewis and manager Mitchell Seninsky as a part of Senior Day festivities.
Maryland returns to action against Towson this Wednesday in the second annual Ripken Cup. The game will be played at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
