UCLA Drops Terps, Forces Monday Regional Decider

LOS ANGELES – Junior centerfielder LaMonte Wade continued his stellar play with a home run, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 4-2, to UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium Sunday night.

The Terrapins (41-22) received another sparkling performance from the bullpen, which gave up just an unearned run after starter Ryan Selmer departed. Wade and junior Kevin Martir both notched two-hit games.

UCLA opened the scoring in the first. Three singles were the difference with Luke Persico ultimately notching the RBI. The Bruins picked up another run in the second as Kevin Kramer knocked in Darrell Miller Jr.

Wade cut the lead to 2-1 in the third. The junior rocketed a 2-0 pitch from UCLA starter Hunter Virant over the fence in right for a sole shot, the second homer in as many games for Wade.

The Bruins grabbed the run right back in the bottom of the frame. This time it was a Kort Peterson single that drove in a run as the home team also chased Selmer in the third and left the inning with a 3-1 lead.

Junior LHP Zach Morris settled the game down for the Terrapins and allowed the offence to slice the UCLA to one in the fifth. Senior Tim Lewis opened the inning with a single before moving to second on Kevin Biondic's sac bunt.

Wade then single through the left side to send Lewis to third where he was driven in on a beautifully executed squeeze play by freshman Kevin Smith.

The Terps had junior Jose Cuas 90 feet away in the sixth but could not drive him home. A defensive miscue from the Terrapins in the seventh allowed a Bruins insurance run and the away team was unable to convert with two on and one out in the eighth.

UCLA closer David Berg closed the game out for the Bruins in the ninth.

The Maryland bullpen effort consisted of Morris, junior Alex Robinson and senior Bobby Ruse. The trio combined for 5 and 1/3 innings of work without giving up an earned run.

Maryland and UCLA return to action Monday night with a regional title on the line. First pitch from Jackie Robinson Stadium is set for 11 p.m.
