Shawaryn, Smith Named All-Americans

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland sophomore right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn and freshman shortstop Kevin Smith earned All-American honors from Perfect Game, the organization announced Wednesday.

Shawaryn earned Perfect Game First Team All-American honors while Smith was named a first team Freshman All-American.

Owner of the most career wins in Maryland history (24), Shawaryn racked up a single season school record 13 victories this season and struck out 138 batters, also a single season school mark. The Carneys Point, N.J., native finished with an ERA of 1.71 and held opponents to a .202 batting average in 116.0 IP.

Shawaryn is currently pitching for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and is just the second Terp to ever play for the Stars and Stripes. He also earned All-Big Ten First Team accolades.

Smith started 65 of 66 games, batting .273 with seven home runs, 35 RBIs, 55 runs and 14 doubles. The East Greenbush, N.Y., native flashed an impressive glove at shortstop and earned All-Tournament honors at the Big Ten Championship after his performance in Minneapolis.

Both players helped lead Maryland to its second consecutive NCAA Regional title and a school record 42 wins, including 14 victories in its inaugural season in the Big Ten.
