Jones, USA Win Gold at World University Games

GWANGJU, South Korea  – Junior center Brionna Jones of the Big Ten champion Maryland women's basketball team won the gold medal with USA Basketball in the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea Monday.

This is Jones' first appearance with USA Basketball. Team USA went 6-0 in the tournament and beat Canada, 82-64, Monday in the Gold Medal match. Jones added four points, two assists and two steals in the final. She averaged 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds with five steals in the six-game tournament.

“It was an unbelievable experience and I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity.” Jones said. “It felt amazing to get to stand on the podium, receive a gold medal, and know that I helped represent our country in one of the greatest ways possible.

Held every other year, the World University Games is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The WUGs are a multi-sport competition open to men and women who are between the ages of 17 and 24 (born between 1/1/88 and 12/31/98), who are enrolled as a full-time college student with remaining eligibility for the 2015-16 school year.

USA Basketball women's teams have participated in 17 World University Games and collected a record nine golds, six silvers and one bronze medal. The USA has won gold medals in the past six WUGs in which it has competed (2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015).

All-Big Ten First Team guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and the 12-member Pan American Games Team are in Toronto for their tournament that begins Thursday. The U.S. Pan American Team will open competition against Brazil Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.
