Terps Head to Great Dane Invitational Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After a successful trip to the Penn State Relays, the Maryland track and field team will travel to the Great Dane Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Park Track and Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.

  • Competition will begin at 12:30 p.m. Updates can be found via the Maryland track and field Twitter page, @Maryland Track.

Leading off

  • Junior Micha Powell earned Terp of the Week honors after a record breaking performance at the Penn State Relays. Powell won the 500m in a school record time 1:12.46.
  • Powell also anchored the Terps' 4x400m team that won the event in 3:43.57, the fifth-best time in Maryland history. Juniors Taylor Tucker and Lisa Meneau, along with freshman Thaila Cooper made up the rest of the squad.
  • Sophomore Breanna Coleman won the third of Maryland five titles on Saturday. The sophomore took the triple jump with a mark of 38-05.50. She will be back in action this weekend.
  • Coleman's performance led a strong performance from Maryland in the jumps. Sophomore Kayla Richardson was the runner-up in the long jump (18-11.25) while senior Johnna Dominick and sophomore Peyton Wade (5-07-00) tied for second in the high jump.
  • Maryland's final title on the women's side also involved Richardson as the sophomore anchored the Terps' 4x200m team. Tucker, sophomore Chandler Baxter and sophomore Deborah Olawuni also competed for Maryland.
  • The throwing events were a strength for Maryland at the Penn State Relays. Senior Chioma Onyekwere picked up where she left off last year with a toss of 51-02.75 for second in the shot put and a third-place throw of 60-06.75 in the weight throw. Sophomore Claudia Ababio was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 47-03.75. She took fifth in the weight throw (59-02.75).
  • The Terps will be well represented in the distance events this weekend with sophomore Alexandra Lucki and junior Sydney Almeida leading the way. Lucki took second in the 3000m in 10:00.02 while Almeida ran 10.13.71 to finish fourth
  • Senior Dan Trettel made an impact in his first outing of 2016, winning the 1000m in 2:27.35. Trettel will be back in action this weekend.
  • Junior Brandon Thompson, Maryland's top male sprinter last season, makes his debut this weekend in Staten Island. Thompson ran season bests of 10.76 in the 100m and 21.58 in the 200m during the 2015 outdoor campaign.
  • Sophomore Louis Corgliano (8:31.61) and junior Tom Hogarty (8:36.24) set personal bests in the 3000m at Penn State and will anchor Maryland's efforts in the distance events this weekend.
