STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Maryland track and field team won the women's portion of the Great Dane Invitational Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex.
The Terrapins won two titles and notched 16 top-ten finishes on the day to score 104 team points, 27 points more than second place Villanova. Senior Chioma Onyekwere won the weight throw while the Maryland 4x400m relay team captured at title for the second straight meet.
Onyekwere's 61-11.75 in the weight throw gave her the win with fellow Terp freshman Claudia Ababio close behind in sixth. The senior placed second in the shot put with a toss of 50-3.25.
Maryland's top 4x400m squad, made up of Micha Powell, Thaila Cooper, Taylor Tucker and Lisa Meneau, ran 3:44.44 to cross the line first. Powell put together a strong performance in the 200m with a mark of 24.50.
Junior Catherine Voelpel was Maryland's top performer in the 500m, taking home eight team points with a sixth-place finish (1:14.89, PR). The 800m saw senior Charlotte Staver score with a time of 2:13.28 to finish seventh.
The Terps notched two scoring performances in the 1000m. Sophomore Alexandra Lucki clocked 2:51.64 to finish third while junior Alexa Squirini placed eighth in 2:59.56.
Junior Sydney Almeida ran a steady race in the 5000m, finishing in 17:40.98 to finish fourth. Freshman Kiernan Keller scored for the Terps with an 11th-place finish in the mile.
In the jumps, sophomore Izzy Laurel led a strong Maryland showing, jumping 5-7 in one attempt to place third. Sophomore Peyton Wade needed a second try at that height, but was able to clear the bar to finish sixth.
The long jump saw Wade leap 18-1.50 to finish fourth while sophomore Kayla Richardson notched a mark of 17-11.75 to place seventh. Sophomore Breanna Coleman scored with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump (38-4.75).
Senior Noella Anyangwe finished out the scoring for Maryland with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.69).
Men's Events
Senior Dan Trettel followed up a solid performance at the Penn State Relays with a fifth-place showing in the mile (4:12.20). Tom Hogarty was close behind in 4:17.13.
Freshman TJ Bleichner put down a 1:04.60 in the 500m to place sixth. Sophomore Louis Corgliano's time of 14:47.05 put him sixth in the 5000m .
Junior Brandon Thompson made his season debut and ran 22.05 to finish 15th in the 200m. Maryland saw a number of freshman perform on Saturday with Hazem Miawad (800m), Jared Loadholt (1000m) and Aaron Barlev (3000m) all putting together solid performances.
Maryland returns to action next Saturday at the Princeton Invitational.
