CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 66 Maryland women's tennis team fell, 7-0, to No. 56 Columbia at the Boars Head Sports Club Friday morning.
The Terrapins (0-1) fought hard throughout, but were unable to pick up a match victory. Freshmen Arnelle Sullivan and Caroline Williams both stretched their matches into deciding super tiebreaks.
In doubles, Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan held a 5-3 advantage over Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev at No. 1, but the match went unfinished. Columbia won the contests at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point.
Sullivan gave Maryland its best singles performance in an incredibly tight contest with Asatrian. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Sullivan rebounded to take the second set 6-4 before ultimately falling 10-3 in a deciding tiebreak.
Williams won the first set of her match against Sarah Hu at the No. 6 spot before dropping the second set 6-2. Hu took the match in a tiebreaker.
Maryland returns to action Saturday against the loser of the match between Virginia and BYU.
