No. 1 Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland men's soccer team moved its winning streak to five with a 2-0 victory over San Diego Monday night at Ludwig Field.
With the win, Maryland (8-0-2, 4-0-1 B1G) stayed perfect at Ludwig Field this season. DJ Reeves and Amar Sejdic provided the scoring for the Terps, who shut out a third straight opponent.
Reeves, who entered the match tops in the Big Ten Conference in assists with five, picked up the first goal of the match in the 42nd minute after a back-and-forth first half which only saw four shots total from both squads. Amar Sejdic beat his defender on the far sideline and found Jake Rozhansky who dished to Reeves wide. A flick from George Campbell back to a streaking Reeves gave the sophomore his first career goal from eight yards.
Reeves helped set up the second score as well. The midfielder from Ashton, Md., was tripped up making a solid run in the center of the box, set up by Campbell from the near sideline. Sejdic finished the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the year and a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute.
"I'm really proud of our team tonight. San Diego came to play. They were a hard pressing, aggressive, very direct team,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We got off to a little bit of a slow start. We weathered a little bit of their storm early and then I thought, as the first half progressed, we settled in and started to play our soccer and created a key goal at the end of the half.
“In the second half we came out and understood what they were going to be about. We raised our level a couple notches and I thought we were in control the whole second half and earned the second goal. I'm pleased with the shutout. I thought our team today got a little tougher. I think San Diego pushed us and we responded well. I'm looking forward to Friday."
Maryland plays host to Ohio State Friday night at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The match will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
