#6 Terps Run Past Wisconsin, 83-77

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 16 of her 27 points in the first half as sixth-ranked Maryland extended its winning streak to five games with an 83-77 victory over Wisconsin on Thursday night.

“I thought Wisconsin came in and was really inspired,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “I thought they played a complete 40-minute game and we struggled a bit to start. Once we picked up the defensive intensity, we were able to do a good job. It was a game of fragments, but I thought we were able to do some nice things in the second half.”

Brionna Jones added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Terrapins (26-3, 15-2 Big Ten), who went 11 of 20 (55 percent) from 3-point range.

Nicole Bauman had 23 points, while Michala Johnson scored 18 for Wisconsin. The Badgers (7-20, 3-14) have lost 12 of 13, including a 90-65 setback to the Terrapins on Jan. 20.

The Terps played down for most of the first half before taking a 36-32 lead into halftime. Jones scored 10 points over a four-minute stretch in the third quarter as the Terps pulled away.

When Wisconsin focused on Jones, the Terrapins simply got the ball to their other playmakers. A layup by Tierney Pfirman capped a 10-0 run and Maryland led 55-44 with 4:41 left in the third quarter.

From there, Maryland stayed in control as the Badgers struggled to make shots. After not earning a free throw in the opening half, the Terrapins went 6 of 8 from the line and led 63-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Brianna Fraser provided a 21-point lead with 6:08 left in the game. The Badgers went on a 12-0 run and a 3-pointer by Bauman pulled them to within 80-72 with 1:33 remaining,

But each time Wisconsin got close, the Terrapins had an answer. This time, Chloe Pavlech made Maryland's 11th 3-pointer to provide an 83-75 cushion with just under a minute left to close out the game.

After Thursday's game, redshirt senior Brene Moseley is at 978 career points and 412 career assists.

The Terrapins will close the regular season Sunday with a 5 p.m. game vs. Minnesota (19-9, 11-6) in College Park.

After Thursday's win, the Terrapins are tied with Ohio State (23-5, 15-2) for first in the Big Ten. With a win Sunday, the Terps can win at least a share of the Big Ten title. If both Ohio State and Maryland wins, they would be considered co-champs by the Big Ten. The Terps are guaranteed no lower than the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament on March 2-6.

The Terps-Gophers game will be televised around the world on ESPN2, WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app.
