Alexander Wraps Up Season at NCAAs

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) finished out his Maryland career Friday morning in the first round of wrestlebacks at the NCAA Championships. Alexander dropped his second match of the weekend to NC State's Jamal Morris, going down in sudden victory 10-8 in the second round of the consolation ladder.

It was a highly entertaining back-and-forth clash on mat 8 at Madison Square Garden, and it didn't take long to light up the scoreboard with a Morris takedown in the opening seconds. Alexander escaped and quickly countered with a takedown, and a Morris escape had the bout knotted a three.

Morris managed another takedown in the first, but successive Alexander escapes had the bout tied at five in the second. Geoff took a 7-5 lead with his second takedown of the match, but an escape and Morris takedown put the Wolfpack grappler back up 8-7.

Alexander wasn't phased in the third, and began building up ride time on Morris from the top. Alexander nearly had back points on two occasions, but couldn't quite get the two-second tilt. He still held off an escape from Morris to get the ride time point to tie, but went down in sudden victory as Morris advanced with the 10-8 decision.

Alexander wraps up his 2015-16 campaign 14-7 while finishing 100-45 in his career. The championships will come to a close tomorrow with the medal round at 11:00 am and the 8:00 pm finals.
