The Terps defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers at home on Saturday. Maryland improves to 3-6 on the season and remains undefeated at home.
The Terps started the afternoon strong by dominating doubles play. Terp duo Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan topped Hailey Barrett and Habiba Shaker, 6-2. Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams continued their doubles winning streak by shutting out Mountaineers Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez, 6-0.
In singles play, the Terps only dropped two matches to the Mountaineers in the No. 2 and No. 4 postions. N. Bredikhina fell to Shaker in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the No.4 postion West Virginia Paula Goetz notched a win over Cassandre Thebault, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Terps Stanova and Hovsepyan continued to play well into singles play with wins over Barret, 6-3, 6-2, and Carolina Lewis, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Olga Bredikhina extended her singles winning streak to four by claimimng a victory over Lyn Yuen Choo, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 10-6.
Caroline Williams closed out in the afternoon for the Terps with a dominating performance winning over Yvon Martinez, 6-0, 6-1.
"Today was all business for the team. We talked a lot about not worrying about mistakes and just focusing on what needs to be done and they all did just that," Coach Daria Panova said. "Very proud of Alex, I think she is getting better every day and having her win at one today was huge!"
The Terps will look to extend their winning streak as they face conference opponents Northwestern on Sunday, March 6 and Purdue next weekend at home.
