Maryland Completes Weekend at Lou Onesty

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Maryland track and field programs wrapped up competition for the weekend at the Lou Onesty Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia Saturday.  

Sophomore Alexandra Lucki took home a victory in the 800, finishing in 2:14.00 to outpace the field. Junior Alexa Squirini also notched top-five finish in the race, crossing the line in 2:19.23.

Senior Katie Nappi improved upon her season-best in the 3000 steeplechase, running 10:50.66 to outpace the field by nearly 30 seconds. Maryland had the top two finishers in the 5000, led by junior Sydney Almeida who topped the field in 17:34.97. Senior Catherine Sheffo took second with a time of 17:52.09.

Maryland captured the 4x400 relay, finishing in 3:53.93 to outrun James Madison by over six seconds. Sophomore Kayla Richardson built on a solid weekend in the jump pit, notching a second place finish in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 11.82 meters.

Senior Chioma Onyekwere won two events on Saturday, throwing 14.81 meters to win the shot put and 52.58 meters to capture the discus title. Onyekwere previously threw 15.97 meters in the shot put Friday, while also setting a new Maryland program record in the discus (54.24 meters). She currently ranks inside the top-30 nationally in both events.

Sophomore Claudia Ababio took second in the hammer throw (52.16m), while also finishing seventh in the shot put (12.56m) and 10th in the discus (40.29m). Junior Jillian Maloney took second in the javelin with a throw of 36.36 meters.

On the men's side, junior Paul Joseph notched a victory in the 400 dash with a mark of 48.64. Freshman Hazem Miawad was not far behind, taking third in 49.51. Freshman Carlos Vanzego also tallied a win, clearing 14.22 meters in the long jump to win the event.

Freshman AJ Ruffin was fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.98. Sophomore Eric Thomas took seventh in the 200 with a time of 22.48.

Senior Dan Trettel took second in a deep field of 800 meter runners, finishing in 1:54.46. Sophomore Diego Lyon was fourth in the 110 hurdles, crossing the line in 14.64.   

The Terps will enter a brief hiatus from competition before returning to the track April 22-23 at the Morgan State Legacy Meet and Larry Ellis Princeton Invite.
