COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn tossed eight innings and tied a season high with 10 strikeouts to push the Maryland baseball team past Purdue, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (20-18, 6-5 Big Ten) pounded out 11 hits behind Shawaryn, led by junior Madison Nickens, who went 3-for-4 and reached base on four occasions. With his 10 strikeouts, Shawaryn moved within two of Steve Schmoll's all-time school record for Ks (272).
Maryland grabbed the lead in the second when freshman Marty Costes hits a massive solo shot down the left field line for his team leading eighth home run of the season. In the third, back-to-back singles from Nickens and sophomore Kevin Smith put runners on the corners before freshman Nick Dunn legged out an infield single to plate Nickens and make the score 2-0.
After the third, Shawaryn retired all 15 batters he faced besides Kyle Wood, who singled twice. He only walked one batter and scattered three hits. The Carneys Point, N.J., native reached double digit strikeouts for the sixth time in his career.
The fifth saw Maryland plate a pair of runs. Redshirt freshman Andrew Bechtold walked to start the frame before sophomore Zach Jancarski singled past a drawn in infield to put runners on the corners. Nickens then flaired a single over the second baseman's head to bring home Bechtold. Dunn picked up his second RBI with a sac fly to score Jancarski after Smith moved the runners up with a sac bunt.
After coming up empty after loading the bases in the sixth, Maryland finished its scoring in the eighth on an Anthony Papio two-run homer.
Costes reached base four times with a hit and one walk while Dunn had a pair of hits. Papio added two RBIs and two hits. Junior Mike Rescigno pitched the ninth for Maryland.
The Terrapins return to action Sunday afternoon against the Boilermakers at 1 p.m. Fans can stream the action live on BTN Plus or listen on the Maryland Baseball Network.
