LINCOLN, Neb. – The Maryland track and field teams completed their final day of action at the Big Ten Championships Sunday afternoon on the campus of the University of Nebraska. The women finished 11th in the field with 32 total points at the event at Ed Weir Stadium.
"We had several athletes step up this weekend and come through big for the team," said head coach Andrew Valmon. "As a whole I am looking forward to the continued growth of our program in the Big Ten."
The personal best marks continued to roll in for senior Chioma Onyekwere on Sunday, as she topped her previous career-best mark in the discus. She medaled for the second time on the weekend, finishing third in the field with a PR of 54.43 meters. The throw resets her previous school record of 54.24 meters set earlier this season at the Virginia Quad Meet.
Junior Micha Powell took fourth in the 400 meter finals, running 52.58 just under a hundredth of a second off her career best (52.49) in the event. Junior Lisa Meneau also notched a fourth place finish for the Terps, clocking in at a career-best 57.90 in the 400 meter hurdles. The duo combined for 10 team points for the Terps with their finishes.
Sophomore Alexandra Lucki added a meet point for the Terps in the 1500, outrunning her seed time by almost three seconds (4:24.61) to finish eighth in the field. The mark moves Lucki up to sixth all-time in the event in school history. Juniors Sydney Almeida and Karrah O'Halloran represented UMD in the 5000, crossing the line in 17:46.57 and 18:40.77 (respectively).
Sophomore Peyton Wade took 10th in the women's high jump Sunday, finishing at 1.76 meters. Senior teammate Johnna Dominick was 11th in the field clearing 1.71 meters. Sophomores Breanna Coleman (11.53m) and Kayla Richardson (J11.53m) took 12th and 13th (respectively) in the long jump for the Terps.
The women's 4x400 relay squeezed out two more points for the Terps, as Meneau, Voelpel, Cimino and Powell combined to run 3:40.82 in the event. The time was the fifth fastest ever for a Maryland squad, as the quartet finished seventh in the field.
On the men's side, freshman Carlos Vanzego hit a new career-best in the triple jump, clearing 14.68 to take 11th in the field. Freshman Aaron Barlev went 15:18.27 in the 5000. Maryland's 4x400 relay squad of Alex Leto, Eric Thomas, Brandon Thompson and Paul Joseph capped off the meet, finishing in 3:09.91. The time was good for 10th in the field, and was the fifth fastest time ever for the Terps in the race.
Michigan and Minnesota tied with 106 points on the women's side to earn a share of the team title. Host Nebraska secured the men's championship with 123.5 team points.
The Terps will next turn their attention to the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Florida starting Thursday May 26.
