COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland women's basketball senior Malina Howard was inducted into the Maryland Medallion Society Sunday at the University Awards Banquet. Howard was also the recipient of the University's Sally Sterling Byrd Award for a top female student.
The Byrd Citizenship Prizes are presented as a memorial the late President Emeritus H.C. Byrd and his mother, Sally Sterling Byrd, to the male and female member of the senior class who during their collegiate careers have most nearly typified the model citizen and have contributed significantly to the general advancement of the interests of the university.
Twenty University of Maryland senior students (10 males, 10 females) received the distinguished honor of being inducted into the Maryland Medallion Society, which recognizes students who have contributed significantly to the general advancement of the interests of the University and displayed outstanding involvement and leadership in campus activities.
Howard is the second student-athlete to win one of the Byrd Awards. Len Elmore was the first student-athlete to win in 1974.
Howard earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology in just three years last spring. She is currently doing post-graduate work towards medical school. She has served as vice president and secretary of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, overseeing and organizing numerous community service events. She is also a member of the national leadership society, Omicron Delta Kappa and the School of Public Health Honors Society.
She has earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in the last two years, as well as Academic All-Conference honors in all four years. Last season, Howard won the Elite 89 Award as the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the Final Four.
