ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Brionna Jones and freshman Kaila Charles of the third-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (19-1, 7-0 B1G) both earned Big Ten weekly honors this week for their performances in the Terrapins' two wins.
Jones was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week Monday for the second straight week and her fourth weekly honor this season. She shares the honor with Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell. Charles was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Week for her first career weekly honor.
Jones picked up two more double-doubles on the week, making it a streak of 10 straight and a league-leading 14 on the year. She averaged 18.0 points, 11.5 boards and 2.5 blocks in the Terps' two victories.
Jones went 17-for-24 from the field for a percentage of 70.8. Against Michigan, Jones led the Terps with 25 points, 10 boards 3 blocks and a steal. She scored 13 of her points and grabbed eight of her rebounds in the Terps' second-half push to seal the win. Against Rutgers, she added 11 points with 13 boards in the victory.
Charles, who has started in every game, gave the Terps' huge boosts in both wins this week. She averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and shot 65.0 percent from the floor (13-for-20). Against Michigan, Charles scored 16 points, eight in each half, with six boards, a block and a steal. With Jones in foul trouble in the third quarter, Charles helped defend the post as the Terps pulled away.
Against Rutgers, Charles scored a team-high 18 points with seven boards as she helped the Terrapins to their seventh straight win.
Jones earned her first conference Player of the Week honor earlier this season on Dec. 12, then her second on Jan. 2.
The Terrapins are ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press poll and in the USA Today Division I Coaches poll.
Next, the Terrapins will travel to Illinois (8-12, 3-4) for a matchup in Champaign on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The Terps-Illini matchup will be streamed online through the BTN2Go app and BTN2Go.com.
