COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Members of the second-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (23-1, 11-0 B1G) have racked up numerous late season honors this week, both on and off the court.
Seniors Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough were named to both the Naismith Top 30 Watch List and the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 earlier this week. Both are watch lists for the nation's top national player of the year honors.
Jones is leading the Terrapins in scoring with 19.2 points per game and rebounding with 10.4 per contest. She is leading the nation in field goal percentage (70.0 percent) for the second straight season and is leading the Big Ten with 16 double-doubles this year.
Walker-Kimbrough is averaging 16.9 points per game and is shooting 40.2 percent from outside the arc. She has scored in double figures in 102 of 131 career games.
Junior Kristen Confroy earned CoSIDA Academic All-District II honors for the second straight season Thursday. Confroy is one of five women's basketball student-athletes on the District II Team, which covers Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky.
Confroy carries a GPA of 3.80 and is majoring in physiology and neurobiology, while starting in all 24 games for the Terrapins. She is shooting 36.6 percent from outside the arc this season for 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
At 23-1, the Terrapins are off to their best start in school history. The Terrapins lead the country in scoring (90.3) and are No. 2 in field goal percentage (.509) and rebounding margin (+16.1). They are third in scoring margin (+27.8), fourth in assists (20.5) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
In Big Ten play, freshman Destiny Slocum is leading the league in assists with 7.2 per game and Jones is leading in rebounding (11.2). She is No. 3 among all league freshmen in scoring (11.4). Kaila Charles is sixth among Big Ten freshmen in scoring (9.8), tied for first in rebounding (5.4) and in offensive rebounds (2.5). Confroy leads the league in assist/turnover ratio (3.2).
The jerseys of Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough will be honored in the rafters of the XFINITY Center immediately after the Terrapins' Senior Day game on Feb. 26. Both Jones and Walker-Kimbrough have earned First Team All-Big Ten Honors, as well as Associated Press and WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honors. They've led the Terrapins to two Final Fours, two conference tournament titles and two conference regular season crowns. They have earned a record of 116-15 (.885) overall and a record of 61-5 (.924) at home at the XFINITY Center.
