Wade Takes Second in B1G Heptathlon Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Maryland track and field squads resumed action Saturday at the Big Ten Championships Saturday at Penn State. A pair of Terps made podium appearances while others punched their tickets to Sunday's finals in their respective events.

Junior Peyton Wade secured Second Team All-Big Ten Honors for the second time this season Saturday, medaling in the women's heptathlon with a total of 5323 points. The total is a season best for Wade, just one point shy of her career-best total in the multi-event set last year.

Wade notched top-six finishes in all three of Saturday's events, first with a 5.70 meter leap in the long jump to finish fourth. She then took sixth in the javelin (32.12m) and capped things off with a second place finish in the 800 (2:20.06). Wade would go on to take seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters.

Joining Wade on the heptathlon podium with a fourth place finish was freshman Dallyssa Huggins, who totaled 5307 points. Huggins took first in the 800 (2:11.43) winning the event by nearly seven seconds. She hit a mark of 5.22 meters in the long jump, and threw the javelin 36.40 meters. The Terrapin duo would accounted for 13 team points for Maryland with their finishes.

Micha Powell will run in the finals of the women's 400 meter dash, after posting the second fastest prelim time. Powell won her heat with a season-best 53.05, and will look to earn her third career Big Ten Championship medal tomorrow.

Kayla Richardson secured a top-10 finish in the long jump, clearing 5.79 meters. Claudia Ababio took 12th in the discus, throwing 48.34 meters. Dahri Jahn-Richardson was the top Terp in the men's 400, running 47.57 in the prelims to take 14th. Gaston Assoua was 11th in the men's long jump, clearing 7.11 meters.

TJ Bleichner was the top finisher for Maryland in the men's 800, crossing the line in 1:51.12. In the women's race, Catherine Voelpel had Maryland's top finish with a time 2:10.26 to take 17th.

The Big Ten Championships with conclude tomorrow afternoon. A portion of Sunday's events will be streamed via BTN2Go.
