Getting to Know: Jake Nielson

Throughout the 2018-19 season, umterps.com will run a Q&A series with members of the Maryland wrestling team and staff. Fans will get to know more about their background and wrestling history, as well as some fun facts they may not have known before. Next up: freshman Jake Nielson!

On winning two state titles in high school:
"It felt really good and is something I hoped to accomplish my whole life. When I was growing up I was able to watch my older brothers wrestle in high school and win state championships. I also got to see a lot of our friends accomplish that feat, so it was a cool group to join. It was really just a great feeling growing up and finally accomplishing that big goal."

On what it means to him to stay in his home state of Maryland:
"It's awesome and it's something I've really looked forward to doing. Wrestling for the same school as my brother, Bradley, while representing Maryland and trying to be one of the best wrestlers to come out of Maryland too -- it's all very cool. I've known Coach McCoy for a while -- ever since I was a little kid. Wrestling for Kerry when I've known him my whole life is very special."

On the transition from high school to college:
"I like the "getting it done" mentality we have here. We don't mess around once we enter the room for practice or the weight room for a lift. We get in, we do our hard work and then we get out."

On describing himself as a wrestler:
"I think most would say I'm more of a brute. I try to be methodical, but often times I like to be the aggressor on the mat."

On what his goals are for the upcoming season:
"One of my main goals is to stay above .500 this season. I want to win more matches than I lose. I'm really ambitious about my goals for this year. I really think that I can accomplish them and get after them."

On current team members he has worked with:
"I've spent a lot of time working with Lucas Cordio, Kyle Jasenski, Phil Spadafora so far. Phil and Kyle have both been really great mentors to me so far. They have showed me the ropes in terms of being a student-athlete, as well as how the team moves and works in the room."

On his favorite food in College Park:
"Potbelly Sandwich Works. It's been my favorite since I was 10."

On his favorite sports movie:
"Miracle"

On his favorite musical artist:
"Right now it's Lecrae."
