Maryland Voted Big Ten Favorite

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Maryland women's basketball team was picked to win the Big Ten by both the league's head coaches and media panel, the conference announced Monday.

Both the head coaches and the media panel picked the Terps to finish atop the league standings, ahead of Iowa. The head coaches voted Michigan to finish third and the media panel voted Minnesota to finish third.

Junior Kaila Charles was a unanimous selection by both groups to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. She earned preseason honors last year as well. At the end of the season, she was named to the All-Big Ten First Team.

Charles led the Terrapins in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (8.1) last season. She has started in all 69 games of her career and has scored 949 career points so far.

The Terps return four of five starters from last year's NCAA Tournament squad. Maryland also brings back 75 percent of its scoring from last season.

The Terrapins come in at No. 6 in the Lindy's poll and No. 9 in the Street & Smith's poll. Charles was named to the Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Second Team.

The Associated Press preseason poll comes out Oct. 31 and the USA Today Preseason Top 25 Coaches poll will be released Nov. 1.

This year, Maryland welcomes the No. 4 freshman class in the country, featuring Shakira Austin, Taylor Mikesell and Olivia Owens, as well as junior transfer Sara Vujacic.
