COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior heavyweight and returning All-American
Youssif Hemida will begin his 2018-19 campaign on Friday, taking part in the annual NWCA All-Star Classic. The event, which will take place in Denver, Colorado, showcases some of college wrestling's most talented competitors, giving fans a look at high-level competition as the NCAA wrestling season gets underway.
Hemida will battle Oklahoma State's Derek White in the 285-pound showcase match. White is coming off a strong junior campaign for the Cowboys, winning 25 matches and falling just shy of All-American status after dropping a match to Ohio State's Kyle Snyder in the Round of 16 at the 2018 NCAA Championships. This will be the first time Hemida and White match up in an official competition.
Maryland's heavyweight enters his senior season after a junior year that included 30 victories. Hemida placed at the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second-consecutive season. His All-American status made him the 20th All-American in program history. He was also named an NWCA Academic All-American.
This will be the second time Hemida has wrestled in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Last season he knocked off Columbia's Garrett Ryan, 3-2, in a showcase match.
