#7 Maryland Holds Off #24 Georgia, 58-51

SAN JUAN, P.R. –  Junior Stephanie Jones scored 21 points to lead No. 7 Maryland (6-0) to a 58-51 win over No. 24 Georgia Saturday in the Terps' final game of the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.

After building a lead early, the Terrapins found themselves in a tight defensive battle throughout the second half. A short run in the third quarter, led by Jones and Kaila Charles, and six bench points from Brianna Fraser down the stretch proved to be the difference

"We found a way with pure toughness to grit this win out against a tremendous SEC team like Georgia," head coach Brenda Frese said. "They're extremely athletic but proud of the 40-minute fight we put together. Stephanie Jones was fantastic. She was our MVP of this tournament. Her play both nights, allowed us to be successful."

Jones scored Maryland's first points and nine of the Terps' first 11. Maryland jumped out to a 26-18 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Terrapins' defense held the Bulldogs (3-3) without a bucket for over four minutes to start the second quarter to push their lead to 15.

After the media timeout, Maryland had four straight turnovers and Georgia cut its lead to 37-30 at the break.

The Bulldogs opened the 6-0 run to open the third quarter to cut the Terps' lead to 37-36 with 7:07 to go. Georgia continued to push and took a 2-point lead at 40-38.

Charles answered with five straight points and she combined with Jones for a 9-2 run to end the period. Maryland led 47-42 to start the fourth quarter.

Both teams made free throws early in the period, then Fraser scored six straight points for Maryland. Her jumper with 43 seconds to play gave Maryland a 55-51 lead. Freshman Taylor Mikesell went 3-for-4 at the foul line down the stretch.

Head coach Brenda Frese picked up career win 492 and now owns a career record of 492-149 (.768) in her 20 years as a head coach.

Maryland is ranked No. 7 Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches Preseason Poll.

Next, the Terps return home to host Georgia Tech (5-1) Thursday at the XFINITY Center in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terrapins and the Yellow Jackets will tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised around the world on the Big Ten Network, BTN and BTN2Go.com.
