Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Kaila Charles scored a season-high 23 points and sparked a fourth-quarter surge that carried No. 7 Maryland (7-0, 0-0 B1G) past Georgia Tech (5-2, 0-0 ACC) 67-54 Thursday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

"I thought we were really excited and ready to start," head coach Brenda Frese said. "We came out strong. I thought defensively it was one of our best halves we've had all season long. We defended and rebounded and dictated like we wanted to. Obviously, we knew Georgia Tech was going to come out of the locker room -- they're a second half team. Obviously, they dictated in the third quarter, but I'm proud of our poise and our composure especially when they cut the lead to one. I thought these two -- Kaila Charles took over in the fourth quarter and went on a nine to zero run by herself. I thought Taylor [Mikesell] played beyond her years with great poise. It was just a tremendous game where I thought we grew up tonight."
Charles began her personal 11-0 run with a three-point play and followed with a jump shot. The junior guard then made two free throws, a runner in the lane and two more foul shots for a 58-46 lead.
Maryland never trailed in the first meeting between the schools since 2014. The Terrapins lead the series 50-18 and have won seven straight.
The Terps controlled the contest through the first quarter, carrying an 18-6 lead into the second period of action. Maryland's lead was largely a result of dominating the glass, outrebounding Georgia Tech 15-6.
Mikesell carried the Terps through the first half, scoring 18 points and knocking down a trio of three-pointers to give Maryland a 38-18 lead at halftime.
Maryland then led 44-25 in the third quarter before the Yellow Jackets closed the period with a 19-3 run to get back into it.Georgia Tech scored 26 points in the quarter after scoring only 18 in the entire first half.
