Diehl Picks Up Pin in Dual vs. No. 19 Minnesota

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Redshirt junior Ryan Diehl secured a first-period fall over returning All-American Tommy Thorn, and four other Terrapins picked up victories in the Maryland wrestling team's (4-11, 0-9 B1G) 26-22 loss to No. 19 Minnesota (6-7 (3-5 B1G).

Diehl's pin was his third of the year and his second-consecutive dual win via fall. It was also the second-consecutive match that the Terps earned five wins in a dual meet, previously picking up five victories at Illinois.

"We saw a lot of good things today," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "I think Ryan Diehl is really starting to get going, and that's what you're looking for at this point of the season. Our team is starting to use what we do in practice while they're wrestling in our matches and that's another postive sign for the team. Obviously the goal is to win the match, but we've started wrestling well in the past couple of weeks and I'm excited about where we're headed."

Minnesota was able to control the beginning of the match, picking up two technical fall victories at 125 and 133 pounds. With Maryland needing to put points on the board, Diehl was able to secure the fall to trim the deficit to 10-6.

With the XFINITY Center Pavilion on its feet, Alfred Bannister kept the momentum on Maryland's side with a strong, 15-6 major decision victory. Bannister did not allow a single takedown in the bout, and his win was his fourth dual victory of the season.

The Gophers flipped the momentum back with three-consectutive wins at 157, 165 and 174 pounds, but Maryland closed out the afternoon strong with three wins of its own.

Niko Cappello picked up a forfeit win at 184, which was followed by an 11-5 decision for David-Brian Whisler at 197 pounds. Whisler jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, finishing the bout with five takedowns. It was his second-consecutive Big Ten victory and his 11th win of the year.

Youssif Hemida was able to close out the afternoon with his team-best eighth conference win at 285 pounds. Minnesota's Rylee Streifel pushed Hemida to sudden victory, but Maryland's heavyweight was able to score a takedown to win the bout.

Maryland will conclude its regular season with a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Rider and Ohio. Maryland and Rider will get the day started at the XFINITY Center Pavilion at 1 p.m.
