EAST LANSING, Mich. – Led by Alfred Bannister's fifth-place finish, the Maryland wrestling team placed three wrestlers who also qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships following the conclusion of the Big Ten Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Bannister's fifth-place finish is the highest of his career, after previously finishing sixth last season. Youssif Hemida's sixth-place finish is also the highest of his career. He earned a seventh-place finish last season.
Ryan Diehl's eighth-place finish came after dropping his opening round bout of the weekend and moving into the consolation bracket. He now has placed in the 141-pound class for the second-consecutive season.
As a team, Maryland finished in 12th place with 30.5 team points.
“Overall I think we had a solid weekend,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “We got a chance to come wrestle some of the best competition in the country, and coming out of it with three NCAA qualifiers is a good accomplishment for the group. We're ready to get back in the room for a couple weeks of practice before heading to Cleveland for the NCAA Championships.”
Bannister dropped his lone match of the day to Ohio State's Ke-Shawn Hayes. He then received a MFF victory over Northwestern's Ryan Deakin to clinch the fifth-place spot.
Hemida dropped his pair of matches on the day, but secured his spot on the podium for the second-consecutive year.
Diehl wrestled Nebraska's Chad Red in his only match on Sunday. Diehl nearly secured a takedown and near-fall late in the third period, but ultimately ran out of time and fell, 6-3.
Brendan Burnham was the fourth Terp to compete on Sunday, dropping a pair of matches and finishing 12th in the 165-pound bracket. Burnham outplaced his seeding, coming into the weekend seeded 13th.
Bannister, Diehl and Hemida will await their seeding at the NCAA Championships, which will be announced during a live bracket release show at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 7. Wrestling at the NCAA Championships will begin in Cleveland on Thursday, Mar. 15, and continue through Sunday, Mar. 17.
