COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach
John Tillman has announced the Maryland men's lacrosse program's 2019 schedule in advance of its 94th season of lacrosse, which includes marquee non-conference matchups with Navy, Notre Dame, Albany and North Carolina.
The Terrapins have led the country in RPI for the last three seasons, and will again be challenged in 2019 with a schedule that features 10 teams ranked inside the top-20 of the final 2018 Maverick Media Poll.
Tillman enters his ninth season at the helm for the Terps after leading Maryland to its fifth consecutive NCAA Final Four and seventh in the past eight seasons in 2018. Since Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland has led the country in NCAA Tournament wins (20), Final Four appearances (7), USILA All-America selections (53) and Major League Lacrosse draft selections (36) while also capturing the 2017 NCAA Championship.
UMD returns several key players from its 2018 squad, including USIA All-Americans
Jared Bernhardt and
Curtis Corley.
"We are excited to play another incredibly challenging schedule in 2019," said Tillman. "Our players will be tested against some of the nation's best competition both in and out of conference. We're looking forward to getting the year started."
Maryland's home slate will feature games against Bucknell, Richmond, Villanova, North Carolina, Penn State, Michigan and Johns Hopkins.
After back-to-back home games against Bucknell (Feb. 2) and Richmond (Feb. 9) to start the year, the Terps will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to face Penn on February 16 for their first of four straight road games. UMD will then play its lone midweek tilt of the season on Tuesday, February 19 when the Terps host Colgate.
Maryland will make the short trip to Annapolis, Md. to resume its local rivalry with the Naval Academy on February 23, before traveling to Notre Dame (March 3) and Albany (March 9) to complete its fourth road contest in five games.
The Terps will then return to Maryland Stadium for four consecutive home contests, beginning with Villanova on March 16. Maryland will round out non-conference play with former ACC rival North Carolina on March 23.
UMD will begin its fifth season of Big Ten Conference play on March 31 when the Terrapins host Penn State in College Park. The Terps will then play Michigan at home on April 6, before back-to-back road tilts at Rutgers (April 14) and Ohio State (April 20).
Maryland will close out its regular season with the 108th chapter of "The Rivalry" when the Terps host Johns Hopkins on April 27. UMD has won four straight regular season meetings in the series.
