ROSEMONT, Ill.  – Freshman
Emma DeBerdine of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team (14-2, 6-1 B1G) earned her first career weekly honor Monday as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. She scored twice and added a clutch assist in a 6-3 comeback win at No. 21 Ohio State Sunday.
Â
The Terrapins trailed the Buckeyes 2-0 at the half. Less than two minutes into the third quarter, DeBerdine passed the ball to senior
Kelee Lepage, who sent in a shot from just inside the circle to make the score 2-1.
Â
Just four minutes later and the Terrapins down 3-1, DeBerdine made it a one-goal game when senior
Madison Maguire sent a pass across the front of the goal to the far side and DeBerdine was there to tap it in with 7:46 left in the third period.
Â
With 3:27 left in the third quarter, the Terrapins extended their lead to 5-3 with a goal off a penalty corner. DeBerdine deflected in a shot by
Bodil Keus for the score with 3:27 to play in the third quarter.
Â
DeBerdine is the fourth Terrapin to earn a Big Ten weekly honor this year.
Noelle Frost was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week three times and
