Terps Travel to Battle No. 4 Wake Forest in NCAA Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland men's soccer team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on fourth-seeded Wake Forest Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Coverage of the match can be found on ACC Network Extra or WMUC.
Storylines
  • Maryland travels to fourth-seeded Wake Forest for an NCAA Tournament second round contest Sunday evening. The Terps have no made the round-of-32 in 17 of the last 18 seasons. Last year in the second round, the Terps downed NC State, 2-0, in College Park.
  • The Terrapins thrashed Iona, 4-0, in their opening round match on Thursday. It was Maryland's most goals in an NCAA Tournament win since 2012. Sophomore Justin Gielen, junior Eric Matzelevich, freshman Malcolm Johnston and senior Luke Brown tallied the goals.
  • On their way to a national title last season, the Terps did not give up a goal in the entire 2018 NCAA Tournament, a total of 450 minutes. The Terps have not allowed a tally since allowing a goal in the 82nd minute of their 2016 NCAA Tournament second round match, a 658-minute stretch.
  • Maryland has won double digit matches under head coach Sasho Cirovski for 26 consecutive seasons, the longest streak for one head coach in the country. The Terps have advanced to three College Cups (2018, 2013, 2012) this decade. Cirovski is 46-18-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Maryland trails the all-time series with Wake Forest 15-17-6 as the sides have faced off 38 previous times as former ACC rivals. Maryland's last win against the Demon Deacons came in 2010.
  • The Terps have been stingy in the back this season and their 11 clean sheets ranks tied for third in the country. Maryland's back-four of Ben Di Rosa, Matt Di Rosa, Johannes Bergmann and Brett St. Martin has stayed largely unchanged this season.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Niklas Neumann has emerged into one of the top shot stoppers in the country. The German is ninth overall and second in the country in save percentage (.822) and has notched eight clean sheets, the most of any freshman in the country. He is coming off a sensational performance in the Big Ten Tournament where he was named to the All-Tournament team.
  • Sasho Cirovski, one of the most decorated coaches in college soccer history, is now two wins away from 400 at Maryland. Cirovski currently has 424 wins all-time, the sixth-most among active coaches. With 400 wins at Maryland, Cirovski would be one of just six coaches in history with 400 wins at one Division I school.
