Terps Ready For Columbia

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team (2-4, 0-0 B1G) will wrap up its four-match road trip this weekend, traveling to New York City to face Columbia on Saturday. The match will begin at 11 a.m. from the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.

LAST TIME OUT

Maryland picked up a 4-2 win over Delaware on Sunday, with Eva Alexandrova, Amber Policare and Millie Stretton all going 2-0 in the match. Alexandrova and Stretton teamed up to win at first doubles, while Policare and partner Zoe Kulkarni also won at the third doubles position. All three would go on to win in singles play, with Policare clinching the win for the Terps at the fifth singles spot.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Maryland and Columbia squared off last season, with the Terrapins claiming a 4-3 victory on the road. Alexandrova and Stretton led the way in the contest, teaming up for a win at first doubles before winning their respective singles contests. Stretton's win at third singles clinched the win for Maryland, besting Columbia's Sarah Hu in three sets.

SCOUTING THE LIONS

Columbia has had a strong start to the 2019 season, posting a 5-1 record thus far. The Lions' lone loss came to 24th-ranked Syracuse, falling 5-2 on the road. Columbia has won five-straight since, including a trio of wins last week to clinch the ECAC Championship. The Lions will host Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon before welcoming the Terps on Saturday morning.

Columbia will be led by Akanksha Bhan, who is 5-1 in singles play this season between the first and second singles positions. Bhan has found the majority of her success at second singles where she is an impressive 4-0 thus far. Christie Wan has also been impressive for the Lions, posting a perfect 4-0 record at the third singles position.

NO STOPPING STRETTON

Senior Millie Stretton picked up where she left off this spring, winning a trio of singles matches through the young season. Stretton was a force throughout the 2018 campaign, winning 15 singles matches and 16 doubles outings with partner Eva Alexandrova.

THERE GOES ZOE

Sophomore Zoe Kulkarni has been very successful this season, winning a trio of singles matches as well as three doubles showdowns. She won her first three singles contests of the season before falling in three sets against VCU.

The Boca Raton, Florida native is coming off a freshman campaign that saw her win 11 singles matches between the fifth and sixth singles positions.

AN EXPERIENCED BUNCH

All eight players on Maryland's roster have at least one season of collegiate tennis under their belt. The roster also includes seven returners from the 2018 squad, with the lone addition being Kansas transfer Amber Policare.

The Terps will be guided by a pair of seniors: Arnelle Sullivan and Millie Stretton. Sullivan is entering her fourth season in College Park, while Stretton will compete in her second season as a Terrapin after transferring from Kansas State.

ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

The Terps were successful in the classroom last season, with three current members of the squad earning 2018 ITA All-Academic honors.

Eva Alexandrova, Millie Stretton and Saya Usui represented the Terrapins on the list, which includes student-athletes who are varsity letter-winners and have a GPA of at least a 3.5.

Maryland also earned the ITA All-Academic Team award, which goes to a program that has a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or above for the academic year.

UP NEXT

Maryland will return to College Park for the beginning of a five-match homestand. The Terps will open up the slate against William & Mary on Friday, Mar. 1. Opening serve from the JTCC is slated for 3 p.m.
