Throughout the 2018-19 season, umterps.com will run a Q&A series with members of the Maryland wrestling team and staff. Fans will get to know more about their background and wrestling history, as well as some fun facts they may not have known before. Next up: redshirt freshman Hunter Baxter
On what he learned in his redshirt year that helped during his second collegiate season:
"I learned so much my redshirt freshman year about collegiate wrestling. The biggest skill I learned to work on was hand-fighting. In college, your opponent is always trying to wear you out and physically beat you in. Also, I learned that no points are ever scored easily, and every point is earned through a tough fight. I learned to really buy into the process and trust in my coaches and that my teammates always have my best interest in mind."
On how he has grown in his two years of collegiate wrestling:
"I've grown quite a bit in many different ways. I've grown in size and strength for sure, but other than that I have learned how to become more physical on the mat. I'm still working toward where I want to be, but I was much less physical until coming to school. I've had to work a lot on my different positions in a cycle, so I'm strong in all three positions in the same time. Again, my hand-fighting and strength have greatly improved, but overall I have learned and utilized so many new skills."
On what he is looking to improve during the next offseason:
"I'm looking to improve in pretty much every position. You can always get better, even when you are the best. I mainly want to improve my neutral work. Being from Pennsylvania I uphold the stereotype to be good on the mat wrestling, but I would love to start getting more takedowns both offensively and defensively."
On having his high school friend and teammate Garrett Burnham in the room with him:
"Having Garrett in the room with me means a lot. I've been in the same room with him since I was five or six years old. We have traveled around the country together since a young age and he's someone that I will always look at as a best friend. We have pretty much the same body type and have obviously wrestled quite a bit growing up, so most every time we wrestle the score will be very close."
On winning "Fear Factor Live" when he was a kid:
"Fear Factor Live" was so funny. You had to show up to almost an audition-like situation and they only have two competitions each day. In my first audition I wasn't even chosen. But, after I was chosen I cruised to the finish line the second time. The first competition was a pull-up hang 50 feet above the ground. I'm deathly scared of heights, so in my mind I was hanging on for my life. Then we had an obstacle course that I flew through to win. It was so much fun. I'm just glad I didn't have to eat any bugs or something disgusting like the people they choose from the audience."
Favorite sports movie:
"Definitely Remember the Titans because it discusses many issues. It makes you cry and motivates you at the same time!"
Favorite food in College Park:
"Lotsa Pizza for sure"
Hobbies outside of wrestling:
"I love to hunt and fish with my dad and grandpa. I also like to kayak and camp with my family, go to FCA or church with
Kyle Jasenski and go to concerts with my girlfriend Quinn."
Favorite musical artist:
"The Beach Boys"
