#2 Maryland Tripped Up By #20 Hopkins, 16-11

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Bubba Fairman scored a career-high five goals, but No. 2 Maryland couldn't keep pace with No. 20 Johns Hopkins as the Blue Jays earned a 16-11 win Saturday night. The Terps wrap up their regular season with an 11-3 record and 3-2 mark in Big Ten play, and will have a rematch with Hopkins (7-6, 3-2) again next Thursday, May 2 in the semifinals of the 2019 Big Ten Tournament.

Maryland had the edge early in the 111th meeting of the two schools, racing out to a 5-1 lead on the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals from Fairman and Jared Bernhardt, in addition to a Roman Puglise strike at the 5:07 mark.

The Blue Jays answered back with two before the end of the period, which began a run of eight of the next nine goals to take a 9-6 advantage into halftime.

Fairman would strike again at the start of the third quarter to get the Terps back to two, but the Blue Jays used another three-goal run to extend their lead.

Maryland would manage a couple goals in the fourth quarter, but JHU remained in control to eventually clinch the victory.

Danny Dolan finished with 13 saves on the evening, in addition to his first career assist on Puglise's first quarter goal.

The announced crowd of 12,405 was the second highest attendance for the rivalry at Maryland Stadium since 1995.

Maryland and Hopkins will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night in the second game of the Big Ten semifinals, with Penn State and Rutgers opening tournament play at 5:00 p.m. Maryland has captured three Big Ten Tournament titles since the formation of the conference.
