COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Seven members of the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team were selected to the IWLCA All-South Region teams, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Tuesday.
A trio of seniors: Julia Braig, Jen Giles and Megan Taylor and junior Kali Hartshorn earned First Team recognition, while graduate student Erica Evans, senior Caroline Steele and junior Lizzie Colson earned Second Team honors.
All seven Terps have helped Maryland to a 20-1 record, 11th-straight Final Four and fifth straight Big Ten Regular Season Title. All seven were also named to the All-Big Ten team, while Braig was named the Big Ten Defender of the Year, Giles was the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and Taylor was the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. Giles and Taylor are both Tewaarraton Finalists, lacrosse's most prestigious honor.Â
Braig leads Maryland's tenacious defense, which is third in the country, holding opponents to just 7.76 goals per game. Defending the opponents best player, Braig has been key to holding 16 opponents to under 10 goals and seven opponents to under five goals. The Big Ten Defender of the Year, Braig leads the Terps with 23 caused turnovers. This is the third year in a row that Braig has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and last year was a First Team All-American. Â
Giles leads Maryland with 76 points, while standing second on the team with 54 goals, 22 assists and 35 groundballs. The senior has had at least three goals in 10 different games this season, has led the team in assists in 10 different games and in points in eight different games. Giles has been named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and an All-Big Ten selection this season and is one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award. This is the third year in a row that Giles has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and last year was a First Team All-American.
Taylor has been spectacular in goal all season long, leading the country with a 55.6 save percentage, 193 saves to only 154 goals allowed and has been crucial to a defense that has held opponents to just over seven goals per game, tallying over a 50-percent save percentage in 16 of 21 games this season. Taylor was named the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the fourth year in a row, was an All-Big Ten selection and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for six weeks in a row, the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week three different times and is one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award. This is the fourth year in a row that Taylor has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and is also a three-time All-American.Â
Hartshorn has been huge on the attack and in the draw circle, standing fourth on the team with 62 points (44 goals, 18 points) on the season and leading Maryland and standing second in the Big Ten with 129 draw controls. Hartshorn has led the effort in the draw, where Maryland has posted a Big Ten best .578 percentage this season and won the battle in the circle in 14 of 21 contests. Scoring 44 goals, Hartshorn has eight games this season with over three goals and eight games with over four points. This is the third year in a row that Hartshorn has earned IWLCA All-Region honors.
Evans leads Maryland with 56 goals this season and stands second with 70 points. Evans leads the Big Ten and stands second in the country with a 76-percent free position percentage. The only Maryland player who has scored in every game this season, Evans has nine games with over three goals this season and nine games with over four points and has been on a tear lately, scoring 29 goals in the past seven games. This is the fourth year of her career that Evans has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and is a two-time All-American.Â
Steele has been the lead attacker on Maryland's offense, scoring 49 goals and posting 15 assists in just 17 games played. The senior has scored at least three goals in nine of the 17 games she has played in including a seven goal performance in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Denver. Steele also scored the game-winning goal in one of the best women's lacrosse games this season, when Maryland beat #3 North Carolina 12-11 in overtime. This is the second year in a row that Steele has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and last year was a Second Team All-American.Â
Colson has been a force all over the field this season, leading Maryland with 38 groundballs and standing second on the team in both caused turnovers (21) and draw controls (115). Colson has nine games with at least two caused turnovers and seven games with at least seven draw controls, leading the Terps in that category in nine different contests. This is the second year in a row that Colson has earned IWLCA All-Region honors and last yer was a Third Team All-American.Â
The IWLCA has honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2019. These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will celebrate the 2019 All-Americans during Divisional All-American Specials, which will be aired on Lax Sports Network in mid-June.
