CHICAGO - Former Maryland baseball player LaMonte Wade received his first call up to the Minnesota Twins Thursday before making his Major League debut Friday night against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Wade becomes the fourth former Terp to appear in Major League Baseball this season and the 27th Terp to appear in the big leagues all-time. He finished 0-for-2 in his debut, but was hit by pitch in his first plate appearance.
As a Terp, Wade starred on back-to-back Super Regional squads in 2014 and 2015. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2015 Los Angeles Regional as he led the Terps past No. 1 overall seed UCLA. He batted .400 with a pair of home runs in the regional and made numerous standout defensive plays in center field, including robbing a home run against Ole Miss and throwing out a runner at the plate in the regional decider against the Bruins. The Owings Mills, Md., native slashed .335/.453/,468 in 42 games during his junior season.
Wade's sophomore campaign saw him start 62 games as the Terps advanced to their first Super Regional in school history. He hit .247 with 12 doubles and two home runs while scoring 37 runs. He made 55 starts as a freshman in 2013.
