No. 17/16 Maryland Sweeps Ohio State, 85-65

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio  –  No. 17/16 Maryland rolled past Ohio State, 85-65, Thursday night in Columbus. The Terrapins (16-4, 8-2 B1G) won their sixth straight game behind a balanced team effort. Five Terps scored in double figures, led by Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year Kaila Charles with 19.
 
Sophomores Taylor Mikesell and Shakira Austin each added 15 points. Freshman Diamond Miller went 6-for-8 from the field for 13 points and senior Stephanie jones scored 10 with eight boards. Senior Blair Watson added nine points with nine boards, seven assists and four blocks.
 
"Every time we come in here, we have great matchups," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought Ohio State never gave up. They came fighting back in the third quarter. Our defense really set the tone for the 40 minutes.
 
"I thought we did a tremendous job sharing the basketball. We're tough to guard when you have five players in double figures and we are making easy plays for one another."
 
Maryland jumped out to a 12-6 lead and force an Ohio State timeout, after Taylor Mikesell hit two early threes and Blair Watson had two buckets. Diamond Miller came in off the bench and scored seven straight points for the Terrapins to put them up 23-8 after 10 minutes.
 
Austin scored 11 of her points in the second quarter to lead Maryland to a 43-25 at the half.
 
Ohio State punched in the third quarter, outscoring the Terps by nine in the period. They cut the Terrapins' lead to 13 just before the end of the quarter at 59-46.
 
Charles was fouled by Ohio State's Kierstan Bell and made the first free throw to make it a 13-point lead at 65-52 with 7:30 to play. After a technical foul was called on the Buckeyes on the play, Mikesell stepped to the line to sink two more free throws and push it back to a 15-point lead. She scored nine of her 15 points in the final period.
 
Maryland shot 56 percent from the field (34-for-61) and beat the Buckeyes in the paint 56-30.
 
The Terps own the series over the Buckeyes, 10-6, after winning the last four straight matchups.
 
Next, the Terrapins will return home to host Michigan State (11-9, 4-5) Monday at 8 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. The Terps-Spartans game will be the Terps' annual Pink Game for breast cancer awareness. For tickets, click here.
