No. 12 Terrapins Win Season Opener

Box Score ESTERO, Fla. -- The 12th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team opened its 50th varsity season Friday with a 94-72 win over Davidson in the #BeachBubble event at Florida Gulf Coast's Alico Arena.

Freshman Angel Reese put up 20 points, 16 in the Terps' second half surge, with nine boards and sophomore Diamond Miller added 20 points as well.

"It's been a long time coming for our kids to be ready for this day," head coach Brenda Frese said. "They were super fired up going into this game. I thought we had a slow start and the foul trouble early really impacted us. We just had great play off the bench from Faith Masonius. Diamond was extremely consistent for us and Angel was able to get her feet wet as a freshman playing through some foul trouble. She gave us a phenomenal second half when she was able to play. Some great things for us to be able to build off of. Looking forward to the competition [this weekend]."

Maryland (1-0) battled foul trouble throughout the first half with five Terrapins picking up two fouls.

The Terps led by nine early in the second quarter at 24-15. Davidson hit two threes and tied it at 28 with 4:43 left in the period. Channise Lewis responded with a bucket, then sophomore Ashley Owusu scored back to back layups to hold off the Wildcats. Maryland led 40-37 at half.

Maryland turned up the pressure on both ends of the floor in the third quarter, led by Reese in her first collegiate game. She scored five straight points to start the third quarter, starting a 10-0 run for Maryland.

In their first games as Terrapins, Mimi Collins, Chloe Bibby, Katie Benzan and Reese combined for 21 of Maryland's 27 third quarter points.

The Terrapins went 18-for-23 at the free throw line in the second half. They shot 50 percent from the floor (34-for-68) for the game.

Benzan finished with 13 points, Faith Masonius added 10 with seven boards and Owusu scored 10 as well.

Maryland will take on No. 24/25 Missouri State Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET and No. 14/14 Arkansas (2-0) Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET as well. Both #BeachBubble matchups will be streamed on FloHoops.com and live stats will be available.
