COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore defenseman John Geppert was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week in a release made by the conference offices Tuesday. This is the first weekly conference award for Geppert after a standout performance to help Maryland secure a 14-13 double OT comeback win over Richmond on February 8.
The Washington, D.C. native was all over the field for the Terps last weekend, recording career highs in caused turnovers (3) and ground balls (4) while scoring his first collegiate goal to help Maryland complete its comeback run in the fourth quarter.
He helped Maryland's defense clamp down in the game's critical moments, limiting Richmond to just one goal in the final 20:36 of play. Geppert is the first close defenseman to earn the honor for the Terps since Bryce Young was named the B1G Defensive Player of the Week on March 27, 2018.
UMD returns to action this Saturday, February 15 to host sixth-ranked Penn at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm. Â
