COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Fourth-ranked Maryland (3-0) scored eight unanswered goals to rally back to beat No. 6 Penn (0-1), 17-15, on Saturday afternoon at Maryland Stadium. Daniel Maltz scored four of his game-high five goals in the 8-0 run, including two man-up tallies. Jack Brennan's goal with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter put the Terps up for good, 16-15.
Jared Bernhardt had six points on four goals and two assists, while Anthony DeMaio had three goals and an assist for four points. Between the pipes, Chris Brandau made a career-high 19 saves, including 13 in the second half and did not allow a goal in the decisive fourth quarter.
Down 15-9 halfway through the third quarter, Maryland slowly climbed back into the game starting with a goal from Logan Wisnauskas on a broken play. Maltz would bag one more goal for the Terps before the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to 15-11.
Maryland carried its rally into the fourth, starting with a goal from DeMaio and back-to-back man up strikes from Maltz. The Terrapin defense flustered Penn on the offensive end down the stretch, forcing four turnovers while keeping the Quakers scoreless for the final 22:58 of regulation.
DeMaio would tally the game-tying goal at 8:02 off a feed from Kyle Long, before Brennan potted the go-ahead score and Maltz added an insurance score at the 6:23 mark.
The Terps trailed for a majority of the first half, as Penn racked up eight first quarter goals to take an 8-5 lead. Maryland's defense recovered in the second quarter, allowing just four goals to keep the hosts within striking distance down three goals at the half.
Justin Shockey helped tip the scales for the Terps in the second half, winning eight of the game's final 13 faceoffs including five of seven in the fourth quarter. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
