#4 Terps Drop First of Season at Villanova, 13-12

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Maryland scored the game's final four goals, but couldn't complete a third consecutive comeback win as the fourth-ranked Terps (3-1) dropped their first game of the season, 13-12 to Villanova Tuesday evening.

Maryland had a chance in the closing seconds to tie, but couldn't convert on its final possession as a turnover ultimately ended the comeback bid.

Logan Wisnauskas led Maryland with four goals, while Jared Bernhardt notched a hat trick to the lead the Terrapin offense. Connor Kirst (3G, 2A) and Keegan Khan (2G, 3A) led the way for the Wildcats (1-2) with five points each.

Villanova had the upper hand early tallying three goals in the first 7 minutes of the first quarter. The Terps responded, getting two straight goals from Logan Wisnauskas before the Wildcats added their fourth of the quarter at the 3:17 mark.

The Terps answered with two straight from Bernhardt to tie it up 4-4 at the end of the quarter. Both teams would trade goals in the second quarter, as Villanova took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats would record six of the next eight goals between the third and fourth quarters, before Maryland staged a comeback attempt down 13-8 with 8:38 to go.

Daniel Maltz started the push with his first of the day at 8:03, before back-to-back strikes from Bubba Fairman cut the deficit to two at the 1:20 mark. Wisnauskas added a man up goal to cut it to one with 38 seconds on the clock, before Maryland regained possession and called timeout with under 16 seconds to go.

The Terps had one last chance, but a turnover sealed the one-goal win for Villanova.

Maryland will return to action Saturday, February 22 to host Navy at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1 pm.
