COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Logan Wisnauskas scored a game-high five goals, while Maryland's defense held fifth-ranked Notre Dame to only nine goals as the Terps secured a 14-9 victory Saturday afternoon.
Freshman goalie Logan McNaney made 10 saves to earn his first career win in the cage for the #7 Terps, while Jared Bernhardt (2G, 2A) and Daniel Maltz (1G, 3A) both posted four-point outings in the win.
Junior faceoff specialist Justin Shockey was the x-factor for UMD, winning a career-high 18 faceoffs at a 69% clip to swing the possession tide in Maryland's favor throughout the afternoon.
The win is Maryland's second top-10 victory of the season after previously securing a win over #6 Penn on February 15.
The Terps got going early, striking first with back-to-back goals in the first quarter from Bernhardt. The Irish would answer with two of their own, before Wisnauskas added his first of the day before the end of the first quarter.
Notre Dame took its only lead of the day in the second quarter, getting two straight goals to take a 4-3 advantage at the 8:33 mark. Maryland rallied from there, scoring four of the next five goals to take a 7-5 lead into the break.
The Irish started the second half on the front foot, tallying two quick goals to tie the game at seven with 10:51 to go in the third quarter. Maryland struck back with a three-goal run, as Daniel Maltz, Wisnauskas and Kyle Long all scored in succession to put Maryland up 10-7 at the end of the third.
It was all Maryland from there, as the hosts poured all four more goals in the second half to eventually secure the five-goal victory.
Maryland will return to action at Maryland Stadium next Saturday, March 7 to host Albany. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Notes:Â
McNaney is the first true freshman to start at goalie for Maryland since Brian Phipps made nine saves in his college debut against Bellarmine on February 17, 2007.
