COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The University of Maryland lacrosse team (12-0) has received the #3 overall seed and will host Vermont (9-4) in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m.
The Terrapins (12-0) are making their 43rd NCAA Tournament appearance, and NCAA-best 18th straight. Maryland also secured its NCAA-best 18th consecutive 10-win season earlier this year with its final victory of the regular season.Â
Maryland won its third Big Ten Tournament Title last weekend, defeating Johns Hopkins 12-10 to remain unbeaten on the season and earn the conference's automatic bid.Â
VERMONT STORYLINES
UNBELIEVABLE BERNHARDT
- Senior Jared Bernhardt was named one of five Tewaaraton Award Finalists, after establishing himself as the premier attackman in college lacrosse in 2021, leading the top-ranked Terrapins to an undefeated Big Ten season (12-0) where the Terrapins captured both the regular season and tournament titles. Â
- Jared Bernhardt's career-high eight goals against Michigan in the semifinals set a Big Ten Tournament record for goals in a game. Bernhardt is the first player in Maryland history to total eight goals in a game, which sits third on the single game list behind Bob Evans (10 – 1929) and Dick Corrigan (9 – 1958).   Â
- Jared Bernhardt set the all-time single season goals record in Maryland's win over Johns Hopkins, scoring his 53rd goal of the season to break Mark Douglas's record of 52 set back in 1991. Bernhardt needed just 12 games to break the mark, as his 4.41 GPG average this season ranks 1st all-time at Maryland and 1st in the nation.
TERPS IN THE TOURNEY
- Maryland has reached its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament – the longest streak in Division I. This is Maryland's 43rd overall NCAA appearance in program history and the 7th time Maryland has hosted a First Round game under John Tillman.
- Head coach John Tillman has amassed 21 all-time NCAA Tournament wins, which ranks 7th all-time in Division I history. All 21 wins have come in 9 seasons of NCAA Tournament play (2011-19) while at Maryland.
- Maryland's current roster has 49 games of combined NCAA Tournament experience, with 13 players appearing in NCAA Tournament games before this season.
SEVEN TERPS LAND ON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
- Jared Bernhardt was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year while Nick Grill was named the Defensive Player of the Year as the duo headlined Maryland's seven-player All-Big Ten selections announced by the conference this week.
- The seven All-B1G selections ties the most-ever in a single season for Maryland (2016) while the four first team honorees also ties a yearly program high (2015).
- Bernhardt and Grill were joined by attackman Logan Wisnauskas and defenseman Brett Makar on the first team. Short stick defensive midfielder Roman Puglise, midfielder Kyle Long and goalie Logan McNaney were second team selections.
- The seven selections brings Maryland's all-time total to 34 since the inception of Big Ten lacrosse.
BIG TEN CHAMPS!
- Maryland came from behind to defeat Johns Hopkins 12-10 on May 8 to capture the program's third Big Ten Tournament title and first since 2017.
- Kyle Long's goal with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter gave Maryland the lead for good at 10-9 as the Terps reeled off five goals in a row in the second half to rally from a 9-6 deficit early in the third quarter. Daniel Maltz scored a team-high three goals, including two in the decisive fourth quarter.
