Terps Battle Duke in NCAA Semifinals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's lacrosse team will make its eighth championship weekend appearance under head coach John Tillman when the third-seeded Terrapins face second-seeded Duke on Saturday, May 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the NCAA Semifinals.

The game, hosted at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Maryland defeated sixth-seeded Notre Dame 14-13 in overtime in the Quarterfinals last weekend, getting the game-winning goal from Anthony DeMaio 39 seconds into overtime to clinch the program's sixth NCAA Semifinal in the last seven NCAA Tournaments.

ALL-AMERICAN TERPS

  • Nine members of the Maryland Lacrosse team were named USILA All-Americans Thursday in a release made Thursday by the organization. The nine honorees pushes Maryland's all-time total for USILA All-Americans to 502.   

  • Jared Bernhardt headlined Maryland's selections, named the program's fifth-ever Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player of the Year honoree and a First Team All-American. Nick Grill, Brett Makar and Kyle Long were named to the Second Team, Logan Wisnauskas, and Roman Puglise garnered Third Team honors, while Logan McNaney, Anthony DeMaio and Bubba Fairman earned an Honorable Mention.

  • The nine selections are the most for a Maryland team in a single season since UMD produced nine during its 2017 National Championship campaign. John Tillman has coached 67 All-Americans since taking the reins in College Park, the most of any coach since 2011.

TERPS IN THE TOURNEY
  • Maryland has reached its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament – the longest streak in Division I. This is Maryland's 43rd overall NCAA appearance in program history and the 8th time Maryland has advanced to the Semifinals under John Tillman. Tillman is 5-2 in NCAA Semifinal games. 
  • Head coach John Tillman has amassed 23 all-time NCAA Tournament wins, which ranks 7th all-time in Division I history. All 23 wins have come in 10 seasons of NCAA Tournament play (2011-21) while at Maryland.
  • Maryland's current roster has 101 games of combined NCAA Tournament experience, with 13 players appearing in NCAA Tournament games before this season.

FAMILIAR FOE
  • Saturday marks the fourth meeting between Duke and Maryland in the NCAA Semifinals since the 2011 season.
  • Maryland won back-to-back games over the Blue Devils in 2011 and 2012 in the semis, before Duke clinched a 13-8 win over Maryland when the teams last met in 2018.

BIG TEN CHAMPS!
  • Maryland came from behind to defeat Johns Hopkins 12-10 on May 8 to capture the program's third Big Ten Tournament title and first since 2017.
  • Kyle Long's goal with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter gave Maryland the lead for good at 10-9 as the Terps reeled off five goals in a row in the second half to rally from a 9-6 deficit early in the third quarter. Daniel Maltz scored a team-high three goals, including two in the decisive fourth quarter.

HISTORIC WIN STREAK
  • Maryland is off to its best start in school history, winning 14 straight games in 2021. Maryland has won 16 straight games dating back to 2020, its longest win streak since winning 16 games in a row during in 2016 season en route to the National Title game. Maryland has completed six undefeated seasons in program history, the last coming during the 1973 National Championship season.
