SPRINGFIELD, MA – Junior
Ashley Owusu of the 15
th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (17-6, 9-3 B1G) is one of 10 of the top point guards in the nation named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Late-Season Watch List Monday.
The Watch List was announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Now in its 23rd year, the award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Owusu is averaging 14.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.3 rebounds for the Terrapins this season. She has scored in double figures in 17 of 22 games played. Earlier this year, Owusu reached the 1,000-career points mark and currently has 1,215 career points and 432 career assists.
Owusu was named to the All-Big Ten Preseason Team after earning All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore last year. Last week, Owusu and teammate
Angel Reese were named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 Watch List for the nation's top player.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late February, the watch list of 10 players for the 2022 Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to five. In March those finalists will be presented to Ms. Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
