COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 2 Maryland will head up to Syracuse, NY for a top-five showdown with the No. 4 Syracuse Orange on February 17, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. The game will air on ACC Network Extra with Calvin Christoforo and Alyssa Murray Commetti on the call.
Where we are
- The Terps defeated Saint Joseph's 15-5 on Saturday behind nine goal scorers led by Chrissy Thomas and Jordyn Lipkin, who each had hat tricks. Emily Sterling made eight saves in the goal before giving way to Julia Hammerschlag, who made her Terps' debut between the pipes.
- Maryland is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in both polls, led by reigning IWLCA National Goaltender of the Year Emily Sterling and Big Ten Defender of the Year Abby Bosco as well as two-time All-American attacker Hannah Leubecker and a plethora of All-Big Ten performers: midfielder Shaylan Ahearn, attacker Libby May and defender Maddie Sanchez.
- The Terps are coming off a season where they won both the Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Championships and made their 12th Final Four in 13 seasons. Maryland finished the 2022 season with a 19-2 record.
50th Season of maryland women's lacrosse
- The 2023 season will be the 50th season of Maryland women's lacrosse, a program that has been the most successful in the entire sport since its start.
- Maryland has won 15 national championships and 31 conference championships. The Terps have participated in 28 Final Fours, including 12 of the last 13 and have won 12 of the last 28 national championships, including seven-straight from 1995-2001. Maryland has an all-time program record of 762-147-3 through 49 seasons.

sterling saves
- Emily Sterling returns as the National Goalkeeper of the Year to backline the Maryland defense in 2023. She finished the year second in the nation in both save percentage (.531) and goals against average (7.87) and had the highest save percentage ever in Big Ten play at .626.
- Sterling was also the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, an IWLCA First Team All-American, a Tewaaraton nominee, First Team All-Big Ten selection, a four-time National Player of the Week and five-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. The senior was chosen as the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason National Goaltender of the Year.
- The senior picked up right where she left off in the season opener against Saint Joseph's, notching eight saves to only three goals allowed, a 727 save percentage, the best in the Big Ten this week.
bosco is back
- Reigning Big Ten Defender of the Year and First Team All-American Abby Bosco is back to lead the Maryland defense in 2023, being selected as the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason National Defender of the Year.
- Bosco tallied 63 groundballs last year, the most in the history of Big Ten lacrosse and the most by a Terp since 2004, while also leading the team with 26 caused turnovers and standing second with 89 draw controls.
new additions
- Reese and the Terps added one of the top transfers out of the portal for the 2023 season in 2022 Ivy League Defender of the Year Marge Donovan. The grad student was the Ivy League Defender of the Year, a Third Team IWLCA All-American, a First-Team All-Ivy selection and the Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2022 as she graduated as Princeton's all-time leader in career draw controls (214) and draws in a season (112 in 2022).
- Maryland also welcomes the nation's top freshmen class, highlighted by the No. 1 recruit in the 2022 Class, midfielder Kori Edmondson. The class also features top-10 ranked signees Jaylen Rosga and Maggie Weisman.
dominance under reese
- Head Coach Cathy Reese enters her 17th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 303-34 as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours and 22 Conference Championships.
- Maryland is 160-5 at home under Reese, with nine undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '21).
history vs. syracuse
- This will be Maryland and Syracuse's 26th meeting all-time, with the Terps holding a 23-2 advantage.
- Maryland has won 12 of the last 13 against the Orange dating back to 2012 including wins in the 2013, 2015 and 2016 National Semifinals and a 15-12 win in the 2014 National Championship. The Terps and Orange met in every season from 2009-2020.
- This is the Terps and Orange first meeting since 2020, where Syracuse beat the Terps 10-5 in College Park.
- Syracuse is 1-0, coming off a 16-15 win over No. 4 Northwestern at the JMA Wireless Dome last weekend in a back and forth contest, where Meaghan Tyrell recorded a game-high eight points on two goals and six assists.
