Q&A with Bri McDaniel

UMTerps.com sat down with Maryland Women's Basketball's Bri McDaniel to get to know her on and off the court. Check out her answers below as she gears up for the season.

Tell us about your most memorable or favorite moment that you have had with Maryland Women's Basketball?
We went to a retreat. Everyone came together and got to know each other a lot better after that. The second, I came home to play at Northwestern and it was a good, memorable moment for me.

What is your favorite extracurricular activity to do on or around campus? When you aren't training or studying, where could we find you?
Either here [XFINITY Center] or in my bed.

What do you value most about being part of this basketball program? How has it positively impacted your college experience?
Just being a part of it. A lot of people don't make it far and just being able to experience it for myself with my own two eyes, having a supportive team, coaches and staff, it has just been amazing. I have grown over the past year. I feel like I have matured a lot. This program has impacted me a lot.

Outside of basketball and academics, what would be your reason for an incoming freshmen to come here?
You can just be yourself. This is a home away from home. I live 10 hours away from here, so this is home for me. It's a good feeling to be at Maryland. You are going to have a lot of people who support you on and off the court.

What is your favorite thing about Coach Frese?
She gets on me and I'll go fix what she tells me to do. She will come over after to joke, '"I guess I have to make you mad more often." Really though, one thing about her is she is going to push you to make sure you are at the top level. I love Coach B, she is like a second mom.

If you had to guess, what would you say you're known for on the team?
My nicknames that I give people. Some examples are Shyanne [Sellers] is 'pook-a-rooks', Faith [Masonius] is 'pookie'. It just comes to me.

Are there any professional players that you look up to or try to emulate in your playing style?
Diamond DeShields on the women's side and Derrick Rose on the men's side.

Outside of basketball, what are your hobbies and interests?
I love to cook and bake. Jakia and I live together, so I'll be cooking and she'll go, "Girl, that smells so good". My family is full of cooks.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions that you follow? Any unusual ones?
My pre-game ritual starts early. I like to come in early and do treatment on my knee, then shoot around. I'll go home, shower and get my mind together by listening to music. I have to listen to music before a game. I'll have a pre-game meal, come to the XFINITY Center and show out.

Do you have any funny or interesting nicknames that your previous teammates or friends have given you? How did they come about?
Laughs – They just call me the same names I give them!

If you had to choose one basketball player, past or present, to be your teammate in a 2-on-2 tournament, who would it be and why?
Brittney Griner - she is big and you can throw lobs to her. I love a good guard-post duo.

If you were to organize a team bonding activity or event, what would it be and why?
I would love to have a cook-off or bake-off. You can bring your best dish and everyone will judge them.

Are there any unusual or unique skills or talents you have off the basketball court that people might not know about?
I dye my own hair.
