Terps Post 7-0 Shutout Win Against Bryant

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball claimed its first home series win of the season at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium with a shutout on Saturday. Maryland defeated Bryant, 7-0, in dominant fashion. It was the Terps' second series win of the season overall.

Logan Koester and Nate Haberthier combined on a four-hit shutout. Koester pitched a season-high seven innings, as he struck out four batters and allowed just three hits. He is 3-0 on the season. Haberthier entered the game and finished the shutout by pitching two innings and allowing just one hit as he struck out two batters. 

Maryland (8-3) had just two shutouts last season with its last coming against Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game where the Terps won 4-0 on May 28, 2023.   

The Terps made consistent contact with its hitting throughout. The Terps didn't record a single extra-base until the seventh inning with a solo home run by Devin Russell for his second long ball of the season. Russell finished with two hits and two RBIs.
  Of the Terps' 10 hits, nine were singles. Freshmen Chris Hacopian and Brayden Martin each had two hits. Hacopian added two runs and an RBI. Alex Calarco had one hit but drove in two runs.  
Bryant (1-6) had just four hits throughout the game. 

Maryland debuted brand new red script jerseys at home for the contest. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Devin Russell singled through the right side to bring home Chris Hacopian in the bottom of the second inning and the Terps took a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Terps loaded the bases in the third and Alex Calarco drove home Kevin Keister and Sam Hojnar with a two-RBI single. Elijah Lambros followed that up with an RBI single of his own to score Hacopian for his second run of the day. Terps led 4-0 entering the fourth. 
  • Starting pitcher Logan Koester allowed two baserunners but escaped the inning with the runners left on base. Hacopian drove home Kiester in the bottom half to increase the lead to 5-0. 
  • Keister grounded out in the sixth to increase the lead to 6-0. 
  • Koester pitched back-to-back one-two-three innings and in the bottom of the seventh, Devin Russell hit a solo home run to take a 7-0 lead.  
  • Nate Haberthier entered the game and closed out the shutout with a one-two-three-inning.
Swope's Take
"The last two days it's been so refreshing to see the guys come out and attack and pound the zone," head coach Matt Swope said. "I can't say enough about [Logan Koester] just attacking and staying ahead of hitters and getting himself out of stuff. It was just an elite start."  

Koester On His Performance
"Trusting my defense is something I've always really believed in and with these guys behind me, it makes it a lot easier getting ahead of counts. It's an easy way to get a victory."
